Error while starting Firefox [RESOLVED]

Post by enieffak » Sat Sep 01, 2012 8:34 pm

Just encountered an error while starting Firefox.

I have FF15 installed on WinXP SP3 32bit. The problem occurs even when all other firefox extensions are deactivated.
I installed Firefox above the current install and it didn't change anything. Of course I also uninstalled Flagfox and reinstalled it again. No change.

Code: Select all

Sorry, the Flagfox extension has encountered a problem. The following error output and a Flagfox preferences dump has been sent to Tools -> Error Console.

After getting the error, please open up the Error Console (Firefox button / Tools menu -> Web Developer -> Error Console) and look for the Flagfox preferences dump. Copy that and paste it here. There is something wrong with your Flagfox saved preferences, for some odd reason, so I need to see what it is.

Have you customized any of the following?
1) Changed any Flagfox action keyboard or click shortcuts
2) Rearranged/modified the list of actions in the menu
3) Added your own custom action(s)

1) removed every clicking shortcut / action keyboard.
2) Don't think so
3) No
But it worked a long time with this configuration.

I'll put up the needed information tomorrow.

Can I just delete this saved preferences? Why does uninstalling the addon and reinstalling it afterwards didn't solve the problem? Are there configuration files I need to delete manually? I am not at the affected computer at the moment, but I suppose there might be settings in the home profile I should delete - if it's that easy than I am sorry for asking without prior thinking.

Yes, that's what I'll be telling you to do next. I need to see what you have first so I can get a better idea of the problem and see if I figure out what happened and maybe fix it. The preference in question is "flagfox.actions". You can get a copy of its value via the dump in the Error Console or via about:config, and you'll be able to reset it in the later.
enieffak wrote:Why does uninstalling the addon and reinstalling it afterwards didn't solve the problem?
Firefox handles all addon installation and uninstallation. Uninstalling an addon does not remove any saved preferences so you are capable of reinstalling again and keeping your data. Firefox really should have a prompt to clear everything for the addon, but it doesn't.

No. Flagfox has no separate user config files.

I suspect some other software on your computer broke something here. Another person reported something along this same line because Windows system restore botched things up. For that case, I managed to add some error correction, but I'll need to know more about the actual problem in your prefs to see if I might be able to do something similar here.

It's also of course possible that in saving all of the changes to remove the shortcuts, something got botched up in the saving process, which would be a notable bug I'd need to fix. Not sure why this could happen, or what exactly happened, but hopefully I can get some information out of the pref dump to know more.

That's odd. How on Earth did a quotation mark get turned into the letter 'b'?... I have no clue; it's not valid at all so it couldn't have been generated by the JSON parser. It's a complete change of one character to another. My best guess is that your prefs.js file (where Firefox stores this stuff) in your Firefox profile got corrupted and this was the result. I don't have a guess as to why.

My paranoid recommendation would be to run a disk check at some point (at least it couldn't hurt).

If you haven't already, please type "about:config" (without the quotes) into the address bar for a new tab and hit enter, click the button for the warning, enter "flagfox.actions" (without the quotes) into the filter bar at the top of the page, right-click on the "flagfox.actions" line (it should be bold) and select "Reset" in the context menu, then restart Firefox. Flagfox should have most of its settings set back to default after which point you can go back into the options and kill all the shortcuts again if you wish.

Thanks for your answer. I resetted flagfox.actions and now everything works alright.

Thanks for your tip to check the computer (which actually seemed to be quite stable).
HDtune couldn't find any errors on the drive, but prime95 stopped working very soon: Therefore I suggest that it might have been a RAM/CPU related error.

Thanks for the great support.

And why do you need to do that? Are you getting "SyntaxError: JSON.parse: expected ':' after property name in object" or, more likely, a different unrelated startup error? If so, please post the error and more information in another topic.

It'd be nice if one of these days someone stumbled across an actual bug I wrote, but they're always just some kind of Firefox profile corruption. It really would be nice if Mozilla added some robust error checking there...
