The Asia/Pacific Region's flag displays two Chinese characters "日本" which means "Japan".
I don't think it's a very good idea to use "Japan" to represent Asia/Pacific Region. Maybe you can consider other flags that are more neutral. Thanks.

Yes, I know. Do you have a suggestion? Maybe "太平洋" (Pacific Ocean) would be better, but I don't think it'd fit in the tiny space. (pardon my kanji if it's wrong; 'tis BabelFish assisted) If there was a decent flag to use that would be best, but I don't know of one.

The short for Asia/Pacific Region in Chinese is "亚太", I hope this will fit in the little space.
Or maybe you can put English on it, such as "AS", etc.

Problem with that is it may not be meaningful in both Chinese and Japanese. (again, BabelFish assisted here) Another idea might be "æµ·æ´‹", just generic "ocean"/"sea".

One other problem is that while "日本" may not be the best description, at least it's quickly understandable by a larger audience. Even I can read that without BabelFish's help.

I'm also hunting for a real flag; one without words. However, I don't think one exists. It's just not an official organizing body, but rather a loose area description. Frankly it's in here because Maxmind just didn't feel like putting in each of the tiny countries there individually.

it's right!
The "Asia" means"亚洲" and the "Pacific" means "太平洋".
So take first character means "亚太" and Chinese (Traditional) means "亞太".
Example:
新加坡亚太管理学院(Asia Pacific Management Institute,Singapore)

Ok, I've asked some others to comment. I'll just quote their suggestions here real quick.

drry (ja-JP translator) likes "AP".
fiag (zh-CN translator) likes "亚太".
Marco (flags artist) suggested the APEC flag.

With the posting of ttakiol (zh-TW translator) above, I guess we're slightly in favor of "亚太" thus far. I personally don't like "AP" that much, as it'd be even more generic-looking with just a couple Latin characters, and it still wouldn't be that obvious what it stands for. I actually considered the APEC flag too, however it's just a typical political logo, and not really that unique. (just a world map with their initials on it, and it wouldn't be that recognizable when made tiny)

So, if no one objects, or rather no one can come up with something better, I think I'll make a new AP flag with "亚太". (red text on white background again)

"亚太" "亞太" does not exist in Japanese dictionary and Japanese means "アジア太平洋 "
Or maybe "亚太" "亞太" in chinese and "AP" in japanese?

Each locale has it's own localization of the name in countrynames.properties that shows in the tooltip, however I'm only going to have one icon for everyone.

::sigh:: Ok, anyone horribly against this? I do agree that having text in the flag is out of tune with the rest of the flag sets. This may not be that recognizable, but it may be a decent compromise.

So, final opinions. Do we like "亚太" or do we want a tiny version of this:
