UK is no longer in Europe? [FIXED]

Post by michaelmaguire » Mon Feb 22, 2010 7:20 pm

Flagfox is quite cool. Nicely done!

I note I sometimes get:

'Flagfox has determined that this webserver is in Europe, however the address ends in ".uk"' -

Last I checked, the European Union (of which the UK was an early member) wasn't allowing non-European countries into the Union -- although I know people have suggested Canada should join (http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1 ... 56,00.html). The sofware must have been developed by a card-carrying UK Indepence Party member, I guess...

Thanks for reporting this.

Could you please give me an example URL so I can test this?

I have an exception in there to make sure it doesn't say EU domains aren't in European countries, however it looks like I'm missing one for the opposite, for IPs located to be in a generic EU IP range with non-EU domains. I'll add the exception. Will be fixed in 4.0.1.

Sorry I've forgotten which one it was but I'll keep an eye out for it.

No good for me due to cache servers.

US connects to Cambridge, Massachusetts:
http://geotool.flagfox.net/?host=www.tfl.gov.uk

England connects to generic Europe:
http://geotool.servehttp.com/?host=www.tfl.gov.uk

Ah - didn't realise they used cache servers. I don't know of any other examples.

Actually, you could still use this example. Just go to the IP address of the European hosted site: http://88.221.162.43. Doesn't show any sensible content, but shows the issue.

Nope, for the TLD / location mismatch note to come up you're going to need both the TLD and location. Going by raw IP gives me something that shows as in the EU, but without the domain name it's not going to give the info bar.

Don't worry about it too much. I know exactly what needs to be added; it's just a couple lines. I'll see if I can search around and find another site that works at some point.

Here's one that exhibits the problem for me:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTr ... /DG_174149

Incidentally, does this mean the UK government is hosting one of its DirectGov servers with a non-UK hosting provider?

This is another one that won't work for Dave. As he's based in America he'll most likely see the result as reported by Geotool (which is also hosted in the states):

http://geotool.flagfox.net/?host=www.direct.gov.uk

And, yes it does look as if DirectGov uses servers based outside of the UK - according to Maxmind's IP to location databases anyway.

I did find another (slightly more obscure!) URL that also exhibits the problem:

http://canalandnarrowboat.co.uk/
